OCTOBER 2008 OCTOBER 2008 Editorial Too Little, Too Late, Too Humiliating, Too!
| On Sept. 23, the House passed H.R. 6897, bill relating to Filipino World War II veterans, by a vote of 392-23. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif.), provides a lump sum payment of $15,000 to Filipino veterans in the US and $9,000 to those residing in the Philippines . The bill, however, includes a Republican-sponsored amendment that would bar Filipino veterans from pursuing further claims, in effect ending US obligations to amend the 1946 Rescission Act. That act of Congress 62 years ago stripped Filipino Veterans of their official status as U.S. veterans and deprived them of rightful benefits under the G.I. Bill of Rights. Monday, September 22, was the first day of Fall. It’s the time when leaves change color and fall off trees. It’s also a time of harvest, of gathering together. "In the garden,” as one poet puts it, “autumn is indeed the crowning glory of the year, bringing us the fruition of months of thought and care and toil.”
We’ve waited for this moment, when things will finally fall in place, dots get connected and important decisions made. [more] | First Volunteerism Awardee

While we are gripped by the intriguing bailout of the failed financial market, my mind backtracks to the conversations conducted by best selling author of “Purpose Driven Life,” Rev. Rick Warren, the pastor of Saddleback Mountain Church, last summer between him and the two US presidential contenders, Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican aspirant John McCain.
One of the most remarkable results of the two encounters was the common ground the contenders forged when they both agreed that the most effective way to manifest their faith in God is to love your neighbor or said differently-- to serve or give back to the community.
If there is a glimmer of hope to expect then out of this US crisis regardless on who gets elected on Tuesday, November 4, is the fact that either candidate believes in volunteerism—the act of expressing one’s belief in one’s creator by showing your love for the poor and the marginalized segment of humanity. Skokie, IL -- In the realm of God’s creation, we can first reason out, our individual birth is no accident as we are children of one ever-loving God. And if we use this argument, we can say that we deserve the circumstance of our birth, especially if we are born to good fortune or wealth. However, we can also say, within our very limited intellect, that our individual birth or gift of life is by no means our wish, our desire, not a product of our will and effort. Or it is a product of chance and accident, as we do not have any personal control on the matter. We are just a part of God’s original plan of creation. Recognizing therefore our divine origin and heritage and our individual and communal role in the Creator’s never-ending and expanding exciting theater of creation, we should be very aware of any element that takes away the spotlight from this joyful and perpetually creative drama. Amidst the triumphal celebration during the Aug.24 closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Beijing , one wonders if the 15-member Filipino contingent was among the thousands jubilant participants inside the Bird’s Nest Stadium.
Considering their dismal record, one can only wish that they just packed up as soon as they got done with their embarrassing performances. Their medal count is zero. Their showings were almost all at the bottom rung of the event’s list they participated in.
