IWP Residents to Give Poetry Reading in Chicago

The Poetry Foundation will host a reading with 2015 International Writing Program Fall Residents Villeda (Mexico) and Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta (Philippines), with Chicago-based poets Lisa Fishman and Daniel Borzutzky.
The event begins at 7 p.m. on Sept. 24th and is free to the public. A reception follows the program. For more information about the event, visit the Poetry Foundation's website
Each year, roughly 30 emerging and established writers from around the world travel to Iowa City, IA, a UNESCO City of Literature, for a ten-week residency at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program. Writers in residence participate in reading tours that introduce American writers to other cultures, fostering global artistic exchange.


Fil-Am History Month Planning, Sept. 10

CHICAGO-- Consulate General of the Philippines calls on all Filipino-American communities in Chicago, Illinois, and the Midwest States, as well as Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana--states under the jurisdiction of this city's consulate-- to conduct various activities to celebrate the Filipino American History Month (FAHM) this coming October.
Officers or representatives of said organizations are invited to a planning meeting on Thursday, September 10 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at the Kalayaan Hall of the Consulate General, 122 S. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1600, Chicago, IL 60603.
Commemoration of the FAHM is made possible by virtue of S. Resolution 298 passed by the US Senate on October 1, 2009, and H. Resolution 780 passed by the US House of Representatives on November 2, 2009, both recognizing October as Filipino American History Month in the U.S.

The Consulate General requested recently the respective offices of Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for the issuance of Proclamation declaring the month of October as Filipino American History Month (FAHM).
Consul General Generoso Colonge asks Filipino American leaders of different villages to request a proclamation letter from their respective city/village mayors or managers.

First Bank offers Shredding, Sept. 12 & Oct. 10

First Bank & Trust offers a free monthly Community Shredding Day, where guests can bring up to 25 lbs. of personal papers to be shredded and recycled from 11 am - 1pm.

Maywood Bataan Day Memorial Service, Sept. 13

The 73rd Annual Maywood Bataan Day Memorial Service will be held at the Veterans Memorial of Maywood Park, IL on Sunday, 13 Sept., at 3:00 p.m. Participation does not entail any cost.
The memorial service will feature those who fought for freedom and liberty in the Philippine Campaign of World War II. The event aims to pay tribute to thousands of Filipino and American soldiers who displayed extraordinary gallantry and courage beyond the call of duty in defending Bataan and Corregidor in 1942. This day also honors the achievements of Filipino and American veterans and recognizes the sacrifices they have made and the heroism they have displayed .
The service will include music from the Navy Ceremonial Band, Great Lakes, as well as color guards from various Veterans Groups and guest speakers.
The Maywood Bataan Day Organization (MBDO) is dedicated to preserving the memory of the defense of Bataan and perpetuating the observance of Maywood's Bataan Day. PIWC Elections, Sept. 27

The Philippine Independence week Committee (PIWC) will elect its 2017 chairperson on Sunday, 3:30 pm, Sept. 27 at the St. Joseph Nursing Home meeting room, on 4021 W. Belmont, Chicago.
Outgoing 2015 Chair Ellen Tan along with the group's Chair of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Lina Jonson will preside. 2016 Chair Mercy Matousek will take over as soon as Mrs. Tan has submitted this final reports including the list of recipients of the PIWC donations coming from the proceeds of this years fundraising projects. 2015 beauty contest committee chair Lourdes Livas file her certificate of candidacy for 2017 chairmanship.
