PH wins Miss Globe 2015 Pageant title in Canada

Ann Lorraine Colis, 22, won the Miss Globe 2015 pageant title Oct. 8. She is the first Filipina to do so. A native of Mexico, Pampanga, she is the first Filipina to receive the title.
Her interview question asked of her was “'what qualities do women possess that makes them a great leader?”
Colis replied that sensitivity and nurturing, according to a Rappler report.

Young mom graduates with help of phone app

A Pinay woman from Antique was featured by Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg for using his phone application Internet.org to help her finish her college thesis after she was stranded on the island due to the Yolanda typhoon.
Riza Mae Tachado said she wanted a better life for herself other than gathering seashells, which was the livelihood of most women of Malalison Island in Culasi, acccording to an Inquirer NewsReport.
After Yolanda struck their island in November 2013, it caused her to miss several weeks of classes. Through the phone app, she was able to communicate with her classmates to work on her thesis. Internet.org offers free data connectivity through service providers like Smart, Globe, and Sun Cellular for those with limited access to the Internet.

DepEd undersecretary remembered for anti-graft


Francis M. Varela, Philippine Department of Education Undersecretary for finance and administration, died during a motorcycle accident Aug. 29 in Antipolo City.
He was known as a “principled man”, fighting against corruption and graft at the financing division of the Department of Education where he had served five years.
The Department of Education praised his work which was “ forging ahead education reforms particularly in ensuring that every cent in the education budget is spent judiciously.”
