Cardinal Tagle & Fil-Am leader conferred honorary degrees

Two Filipino American leaders will each be conferred an honorary doctorate by the Catholic Theological Union (CTU) during a commencement ceremony at K.A.M. Isaiah Israel Congregation in Chicago on May 14.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, was recently named the President of the Catholic Bible Federation. In 2011 he was installed as Archbishop of Manila. Tagle is widely known for his listening, pastoral manner and voice of compassion.
Teresita Nuva is the Director of the Office for Asian Catholics in the Chicago Archdiocese. For the past 25 years, she has overseen the ministries of the Filipino, Burmese, and Japanese communities. She coordinates community development, pastoral counseling, and crisis intervention for the Asian Missions and Centers apostolates of other Asian American communities.

 

PH Talk show“The Buzz” airs its last episode

Showbiz talk show “The Buzz” on ABS-CBN hosted Boy Abunda, Tony Gonzaga and Kris Aquino, taped their last episode on April 5 during which they announced the show’s cancellation.
Abunda thanked his fans for their support and admitted it was “hard” and “painful” for him to accept the end of the show.
The show has run for 15 years. Plans are underway to relaunch it so that it can adapt to changes, ABS-CBN Corporate stated in a Philippine Daily Inquirer news report.
The Buzz is the second longest running talk show behind GMA’s 7 Startalk, the report added.
“Kapamilya Mega Blockbusters” will fill in the time slot of the show. Some of the previous hosts of the talk show were KC Concepcion, Ruffa Gutierrez and Christy Fermin.

 

Fil-Am actress stars in Broadway revival of “Gigi”



The title character in the Broadway revival musical “Gigi” is played by Filipino American actress Vanessa Hudgens, who starred in the “High School Musical” films.
This is Hudgen’s Broadway debut. She is quoted as saying that “it is a dream come true” playing the lead role.
Originally played by actress Leslie Caron on film fifty years prior, Hudgens will play a young woman groomed to have a career as a courtesan.
In 2010 she played the role of Mimi Rogers in the theatrical version of “Rent” at the Hollywood Bowl. She has appeared in many films and television shows as well since 2002.
Hudgens is originally from Salinas, California. Hudgen’s mother Gina is a Filipina; her father Greg is Irish and Native American.•

Oriental Mindoro Governor receives 10 year sentence for graft





The treasurer of President Aquino’s Liberal Party, Incumbent Oriental Mindoro Gov. Alfonso Umali Jr., received a 10 year sentence by the Sandiganbayan on April 20 for allocating a P2.5-million loan to Alfredo Atienza, a ship owner in 1994.
The money was spent for the “repair, operation and maintenance”, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
Former Oriental Mindoro Rep. Rodolfo G. Valencia and former Board Member Romualdo Bawasanta were also found guilty for violating Republic Act No. 3019, or AntiGraft And Corrupt Practices, Act, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The court also revoked their retirement and gratuity benefits and ordered the refund of the P2.5 million loan to the provincial government.
