Fil-Am wins council seat in Florida

A Filipino American is the first Asian American to serve on a Florida City Council.
Republican Anna Lopez Brosche defeated incumbent Democrat Council Member Kimberly Daniels on May 16 with 104,835 votes compared with Daniels’ 84,625 votes.
She chairs the United Way of Northeast Florida Board of Directors and is a managing shareholder at Ennis Pellum & Associates CPAs, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer news report.
Both had beaten Republican David Taylor and Democrat Tery Reed during the March 24 election.
She earned a Bachelors and Masters degrees in accounting from the University of North Florida.
She has served as treasurer for local and state political campaigns. She holds a seat on the boards of the JAX Chamber Foundation, the UNF Foundation, and the Ritz Chamber Music Society.

Culinary student wins $20K scholarship



A Filipina culinary student won a $25K scholarship after she teamed up with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasi and assisted preparing the winning dish during the third annual Chase Sapphire Preferred Grill Challenge April 25 at the ninth annual Vegas Uncork’d event by Bon Appétit.
Elsa Sabellano Jenstad of Team Emeril competed against Michael Mina, a James Beard Award-winning chef, and culinary student Krista Burdick, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer news report.
Using black garlic as one of the ingredients, both teams were tasked with making bouillabaisse, a traditional French dish. Team Emeril prepared the dish with lemongrass for a Filipino flare, while Team Michael prepared their dish with scallops and snapper.
Jenstad and Burdick are both students of the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Las Vegas. Burdick won a $5,000 scholarship to fund her culinary education.

Fil-Brit wins council seat in the United Kingdom



Filipina-British Cynthia Barker under the Conservative Party, was elected in the United Kingdom as Hertfordshire’s first ever Filipino Town Councillor for Elstree and Borehamwood and Borough Councillor for Potters Bar Furxefield in the national elections on May 8.
She works as a school govenor at St. Nicholas School and is the chair of trustees of Elstree and Borehamwood museum, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer News report.
Barker published a book along with her business partner Charles Kelly, formerly Elstree’s local mayor, “How to Come to the UK” when she was a registered immigration adviser in 2005,” the report said.
She hails from San Pablo City in Laguna. Her mother arrived in the UK in the 70s as an overseas worker and she joined her mother in the mid 80s.

Oriental Mindoro Governor receives 10 year sentence for graft



Masbate Gov. Rizalina Seachon-Lanete has been indicted for plunder and graft cases for allegedly taking P108.4 million from her Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) during her term as representative of the district of Masbate from 2004-2010. She pleaded not guilty on April 9 for the criminal charges.
As of May 28, she is detained at the female detention facility of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology at Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City. This is also where alleged pork barrel mastermind Janet Lim Napoles is also being held. She has also plead not guilty to her charges of graft.
Lawrence Arroyo, Gov. Lanete’s lawyer, says that Lanete is innocent and said that her document signatures were forged, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer News report.
