A Filipina female intelligence operative during WWII who was awarded the Silver Star medal by the US Armed Forces died at the age of 95.
Cpl. Magdalena Estoista Leones, the first woman in history to receive this medal, was acknowledged as she “risked her life carrying intelligence data, medical supplies, and vital radio parts through a garrison that was enemy-held territory,” according to her medal citation acquired by the Inquirer News Services.
She served as an operative from February 27 to September 26, 1944. She knew the consequences if she was caught, which would be brutal torture by the enemy, the report added. (ABOVE Photo: Cpl. Magdalena E. Leones in 1944)
