Sen. Loren Legarda appointed by UN as Global Champion



Sen. Loren Legarda has been appointed by the UN as the Global Champion for Resilience by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) during the Climate Vulnerable Forum High Level Meeting at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, or COP21 Nov. 30. She has been a consistent supporter of advancing disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. She has also been involved in promoting environmental laws such as the clean air act, , the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, among many others.

 

Inventor’s device warns of falls, tested by hospital

Filipino Angelo Umali vowed that his grandmother’s fatal fall would not happen to anyone else. Umali has invented a device called Simple Wave which incorporates a GSM chipset with micro-SIM, speaker and microphone to detect a fall. It also measures how heavy the fall was, how the fall happened, and contacts relatives, according to an Inquirer News report.The Medical City hospital in the Philippines is coordinating with Umali to test its first 100 units of devices.

 

Pinay invents lamp run by saltwater, honored at APEC

Filipina Aisa Mijeno, an engineer and CEO of Sustainable Alternative Lighting (SALT), was invited to the APEC CEO Summit in November where she spoke with President Obama and Jack Ma, CEO of ecommerce Alibaba. Mijeno is the inventor of the SALT lamp, which is a lamp run by saltwater. It can operate for eight hours using saline solution or saltwater, according to an Inquirer News report.
