Fr. Fidel Villarroel, OP historian, saint maker, 87

Spanish Dominican friar Fr. Fidel Villarroel, O.P., whose historical spadework led to the canonization of Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, the first Philippine saint, died Oct. 23 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Hospital. He was 87. Father Villarroel was a longtime professor of Church history at the UST Ecclesiastical Faculties.
Father Villarroel had also helped in the cause for beatification of Mother Francisca, the 17th-century founder of the homegrown Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, the congregation that runs Santa Catalina College in Manila and Siena College in Quezon City.

He was buried at Santo Cristo Church, San Juan City, the cemetery of the Spanish Dominicans. (Lito B. Zulueta, PDI)

Efren C. Adaya, M.D., passed away on Nov. 19. He was the husband of Eva (nee Adan); father of Myra (Mark) Almase, Marlowe (Melissa) Adaya, Marites (Michael, M.D.) Rivera and Michelle (Omar) Salvador; grandfather of Jillian and Danielle, Griffin and Ronin, Madeline, Mikayla, Jake, Evan and Cara; brother of Angel (Luz) Adaya, Rueben (Elsie) Adaya and the late Minda (Romulo) Bathan. Dr. Adaya had a private practice and also was on staff at Thorek Hospital. Wake held at Donnellan Family Funeral Home in Skokie. Funeral Mass at Saint Martha Church in Morton Grove, IL. Interment Maryhill Cemetery.

Ella Frias Cardeno died on Oct.. 23. She was 54. She was the wife of Socrates. Mother of Sheela, Socrates Jr., and Shannon. Sister of Eric (Teresa) Frias, Evy (Noli) Blancaflor, Eileen (Selwin) Trias, Jun (Joanne) Frias, Edwin Frias, Evan (Amy) Frias, Errol (Arlene) Frias and the late Genevieve (Gary) Sotalo. Aunt of Effie dela Vega, Erika Maliwanag, Erickson Frias, Katrina, Krista, Michael Blancaflor, Seleen and Christine Trias, Lauren and Jonathan Frias, Kaden Frias, and Aiden and Liam Sotelo.

Ella loved gardening and flowers and was a helping and caring matriarch. Wake was held at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home proceeding to St. John Brebeuf Church for Mass service. Interment at Maryhill Cemetery in Niles.

Perla M. Calantas, 66

Perla M. Calantas passed away on Oct. 19 at the age of 66. Beloved wife of Carlos Calantas. Loving Nanay to Rex (Shiela), Lourdes (Rafael) Villanosa, Lynette (Roni) Millan, Carlos and Lanny. Dear Lola of Jarod, Jacob, Jana Karla, Alexa Nicole, Lyrone, Carlo Luis, and L.G. Isabelo R. Lim, MD, died on Nov. 9. at age 87. He was the husband of Barbara; father of Kathleen (Michael) Henson, Deborah (Joe) Lim and Jacqueline (Jorge) Rojas; grandfather of Jeremy Henson, Jarrett Henson, Isabella Rojas, Olivia Rojas, Andres Rojas and Antonia Rojas; brother of Elena Lim and Lilia Maceda; brother-in-law of Ted (Jane) Nieland. Wake held at Holy Family Church in Inverness for Memorial Visitation from until time of Memorial Mass.
