First Filipino in Canada’s Senate dies suddenly on parliamentary trip

TORONTO, Ontario — Senator Tobias Enverga, the first Filipino Canadian to be appointed to Canada’s Senate, has died at age 61 during a parliamentary trip to Colombia.

His office said Enverga died November 16, with his wife by his side. The Conservative senator from Ontario was in Colombia the ParlAmericas Annual Plenary Assembly along with Liberal MPs Robert Nault and Randy Boissonnault, NDP MP Richard Cannings and Conservative MP Bev Shipley, according a report by CBC.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued the following statement: “Senator Enverga served Canadians long before his appointment to the Senate in 2012, and was the first Filipino-Canadian elected to public office in the City of Toronto. He was a tireless advocate for the Filipino community and people with disabilities, and founder of the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation. As a Senator, he continued to actively promote the values of multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusiveness.”

Enverga was born in the Philippines and served as a school trustee for the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Enverga is survived by his wife, Rosemer, and three daughters. Rystle, Reeza and Rocel. He is a well-known advocate in the Senate for people who have Down syndrome, like his daughter.

Henry L. Tan, 55

Henry L. Tan passed away on Nov. 17 at age 55. He was the husband of Laura. Father of Nicholas (Melyrose) and Monique Tan. Grandpa of James. Brother of Jaime (Phoebe) Tan, Vivian (Peter) Veloso, Linda Koh, Cynthia (late Edwin) Chin, Eduardo Tan, and Norilyn (Tom) Prystalski. Ako Henry of Japheth, Kimberly, Kelvin, Stephanie, Corinne, Christopher, and Jennifer, and uncle of Henry of Lily, Jenise, Jessica, Ethan, Sabrina, Madeline, Jovani, and the late Julien. Wake held at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home in Niles. Interment Maryhill Cemetery.

Aurora D. Corpuz, 94

Aurora Dumlao-Corpuz passed on peacefully in the early morning of Nov. 6 at her home in Richmond, Texas. Born in San Narciso, Zambales, she earned her education degree from the University of Sto. Tomas. She was a beloved teacher at Ramon Magsaysay High School where she retired.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dominador. She is survived by her children Fe (Wilfredo) Manuel, Riza (Edwin) Bautista, Gilda (Renato) Francisco and Dominador, Jr. (Carmen); her 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Memorial services were held at a Methodist United Church in Richmond, Tx.

Juanito C. Murillo, 82

Juanito Crespo Murillo of Wheeling, Il. died Nov. 7 at the Lutheran General Hospital. He was 82. He was originally from Patnongon, Antique. He is survived by his wife, Sally (Rosalia) and their children Analina Murillo, Johnfrey Murillo, Mickle Agusar and Juanita (Manny) Banes. Memorial mass was celebrated Nov. 14 at St. Joseph the Worker in Wheeling.

Antonio Raymundo, 82

Antonio H. Raymundo died on Nov. 3. He was 82. He is predeceased by his wife Rufina and wife Teodorica. He was the father of Angelina (Fernando) Francisco, Claribel (Alberto) Manalo, Grace (Aries) Vetus, Genesis (Maree) Raymundo, the late Emmanuel Raymundo, and the late Divina (Tinoy) Sintones. Lolo of Ivy (Bryan), Aira, Martin, Jhovie, Adrian, Nikki, Amiel, Alyanna, Nina, Gabby, and great grandfather of Riley. His wake was held in early November at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Maryhill Catholic Cemetery.



Angelita D. Santos, 83

Angelita De Dios Santos died on Nov. 7. She was 83. She is predecased by husband Federico Santos, Jr.; Mother of Perlita Santos (Tess Sagaidoro), Fortunato (Evelyn), Alexander (Maritess), Ric (Myrna), Vicky (Joseph) Valeriano, Fred (Ella), Henry (Lhyzza) and Liza (Pinggoy) Garcia. She was lola of 25; great-Lola of 8. Sister of Deo De Dios and other predeceased siblings. Wake held at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home in Niles. A funeral Service held at. Private cremation will follow. Her remains will be buried in the Philippines.

Andrew J. Sanchez, 31

Andrew J. Sanchez passed away on Nov. 8 at the age of 31. He was a resident of Elgin. Son of Noel and Raquel Sanchez. He was the older brother of Brian (Nina) and Tracy Sanchez. Uncle of Nathan and Ryan Sanchez. Andrew was the nephew, relative, and friend of many. Wake held Nov. 12 at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home in Niles. Funeral from the funeral home to St. Isaac Jogues Church. Interment Ridgewood Cemetery.

Florabel Cudal, 84

Florabel Cudal passed away Oct. 25 at age 84. She was predecased by her husband Teodoro. She was the mother of Robel (Jennifer), Nelson, and Jerry Cudal, and Jenny Binder. Grandmother of Jeremy, Justin, Andrew James, Jereanne, Jasmine, and the late James. She was the sibling of Wilfred (Digna) Fran. Tita of Rochelle and Jojo. Wake held at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home. Interment Maryhill Cemetery.

Felomena A. Rivera, 59

Felomena A. Rivera, aka Mercedita Cagbabanua Gonzales, died on Nov. 2 at age 59. Companion of Farrukh Nazir. Mother of James (Kaye) Gonzales. Grandmother of Clyra. Wake held at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home. Interment will be in Dapitan City Cemetery in Dapitan City.

Lucila G. Menardo, 91

Lucila Gomez Menardo died on Nov. 11. She was 91. Predeceased by husband Antonio Dela Fuente Menardo, mother of Valentina Menardo, Renato (Concepcion), Mario (Beatriz), Corazon Menardo, Josefina (Domingo) Rabang and Florentina (Rodelio) Agustin. Lola of Ray Anthony (Donna Belle), Mary Grace, Ashley, Camille, Djoanne, John Christopher, John Paul, Lucille and Raph Antoni. Wake was held at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home in mid November.
Lucila was flown back to the Philippines where her funeral services & burial took place at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, #2, Balagtas, Orion, Bataan.

Fe O. Vertudes, 71

Fe Oineza Vertudes died on Oct. 27 at the age of 71. She was born in Bani, Pangasinan. She was predeceased by siblings Eddie, Elly, Floro, Florencio Jr. and Vicente. Was sister of Jane. She is survived by her husband of 49 years Virgilio P. Virtudes Sr. and children Loreto (Robert), Rowena (Nelson), and Virgilio (Zerlina). Grandmother to Andrea, Aaron, Lara, Lianne, Leila , Anica, Nina, Corbin, Adan & Amshel. She was a teacher by profession.Wake held at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home.
