4th Annual  Health Fair at Rizal Center

August 29, Sunday, 8:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. The FACC (Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago) and the FACHIC are partnering together to host a Free Health Screening which includes free information and referrals which will be available at the Jose Rizal Heritage Center for Filipinos and other ethnicities without health insurance.
Nearly 300 attendees were present last year. Volunteer doctors and nurses will offer screenings for: cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, prostate (PSA test), osteoporosis, dental, podiatry and much more. Also information on diabetes prevention, heart disease, parenting, nutrition and physician referrals will be given.

NAYON Classes Aug. 7, 21

August 7 & 21, Saturdays, 2-3:30 p.m. NAYON is offering two more classes for its “Pearl of the Pacific” series. NAYON  offers enrichment programs for children. Come and enroll your child in the Pearl of the Pacific classes to help them understand their Filipino heritage. The classes will include geography, history, myths/story-tellint, food and natural wonders.
The cost per class is $15 per child and classes are held at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church located at 2600 W. 75th Street, Woodridge, Il 60517.

Garden sale to benefit Immigration project

Sat., Aug 7, 10-1 p.m., 4 -8 p.m. & Sun., Aug. 8, 10 -1 pm & 4 -8 pm. Juanita Burris’ Brickyard Community Garden will have a special fundraising event for AFIRE (Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment). AFIRE is raising funds for Community Organizing and Campaign for Immigration reform.  Unusual house plants, specially designed summer flower pots, and hanging baskets are for sale. Tea, puto, and home made cookies will be served. If you can’t come, we will accept donations made payable to AFIRE and mailed to AFIRE, 800 S. Wells, Ste. 1449, Chicago, IL 60607. Ang Pag-Ibig Mo: A Love Cycle, Aug. 21

August 21,   Saturday, 6-8 p.m.,           Come and experience     Ang Pag-Ibig Mo: A Philippine Love Cycle, a benefit concert for Bantay Bata 163 and Gawad Kalinga. It will be featuring a collection of well-loved Filipino songs written by our most prolific Filipino composers.
The concert features Mezzo Soprano Clarissa Ocampo, Baritone Andrew Fernando, and world-renowned pianist Raul Sunico, who is also the current Artistic Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and Dean of the UST Conservatory of Music. The script is written by award-winning writer and director, Floy Quintos. The concert is making its debut at the Nichols Concert Hall of the Music Institute of Chicago in Evanston, IL.
Ticket prices are $75 VIP, $50, and $25.

Fil-Am  WWII  Compensation Forum, Aug. 6

ANCOP Walk for the Poor, Aug. 28

ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor), a non-profit charitable organization founded by the Couples for Christ is giving shelter and child education programs for those living in poverty.
It will host a US-wide walk   , Saturday, August 28, to raise $100,000 for 260 beneficiaries of the Child Sponsorship Program (CSP). The program aims to send children who can’t afford an education (elementary, high school, or college) to sign up for school.

Kundiman’s at Shedd Aquarium, Aug. 29

The Philippine Consulate General in collaboration with the Shedd Aquarium will sponsor Chicago-based artists Emily Morales (soprano), Rica Goldyn (soprano) and Paul Aquino (baritone) on Sunday, August 29 at 4 p.m. at the Wild Reef of the Shedd Aquarium located at 1200 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago.
The afternoon concert entitled Kundiman will feature a recital of Philippine classic, folk and popular tunes.
The program will showcase the works of Nitoy Gonzales Angel Penas, Nicanor Abelardo, Santiago Suarez,  Resty Umali and Levi Celerio, Chris Zamora, Manuel Velez and other Filipino composers.
This afternoon concert will offer the people of Chicago a broad view of the Philippine culture through its music. It is also a unique opportunity to connect Shedd guests to the Wild Reef exhibit.

Dagupan City Club – USA Picnic Aug. 8

Knights of Columbus Anniversary, Aug. 21

Aug 21, Saturday, Dinner at 7 p.m., The Knights of Columbus, The Fr. Joseph Stroot Council #3243 is celebrating its 60th Anniversary at the Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield, IL.
Golfing will start at 5 p.m. The attire required for dinner is formal. There will be a cash bar and the cost is $55 per person. Music will be provided by Freddy Alba’s JR DHAZZ. 3rd Annual Adobofest, Sept. 19

September 19, Sunday,  11 a.m., Adobofest is a culmination of a community picnic, taste-off and a fundraiser for (GK) Gawad Kalinga. It will start with a Mass at 11 a.m.. Later on, at 11:30, there will be live performances and an Adobo tasting contest. Adobofest is sponsored by Gawad Kalinga and the Filipino American Network (FAN).
To taste each of the adobo competitor’s dish will cost $7 each. At 1 p.m., participants may register for the Gawad Kalinga 5 K walk to raise money for the poor in the Philippines.
The fest is located at Labagh Woods, Grove #4, 5300 N. Cicero Avenue between Cicero & Foster Roads in Chicago.  Live Bands/singers interested in performing at the Adobofest may contact Edgar at 312-519-2834. •
